Overview

**SSP-004184 + simvastatin** is a combination of two agents: SSP-004184 (also known as SPD602 or FBS0701), an investigational oral iron chelator developed primarily for the treatment of transfusional iron overload, and simvastatin, a statin-class small molecule approved to lower LDL cholesterol and reduce cardiovascular risk. SSP-004184 works by binding excess iron, facilitating its excretion, and potentially reducing tissue iron accumulation, which is particularly relevant in patients with chronic transfusional requirements. Simvastatin inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme of the mevalonate pathway of cholesterol biosynthesis, decreasing cholesterol production in the liver and reducing the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Combination use may be evaluated for pharmacokinetic interactions or safety in special populations but is not an approved or widely registered therapy.
