SSPD is a polymer-drug conjugate consisting of pomegranate peel ethanolic extract (SSE2-L) grafted onto a dextran backbone. The pomegranate extract is rich in secondary metabolites, particularly hydrolysable ellagitannins, which possess antioxidant and anticancer properties. By conjugating these polyphenols to dextran, the formulation aims to improve bioavailability, preserve chemical integrity, and enhance stability. In vitro studies have demonstrated that SSPD inhibits the proliferation of breast cancer cell lines, such as MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231, in a concentration- and time-dependent manner by inducing G1 cell-cycle arrest and reducing clonogenic growth. It is being investigated as a potential candidate for next-generation nutraceuticals and phytopharmaceuticals in cancer chemoprevention and adjunctive therapy.
