SSR180575 is a small molecule drug that acts as a highly selective and potent agonist at the peripheral benzodiazepine receptor (PBR), now more commonly known as the translocator protein 18 kDa (TSPO). It binds with high affinity to TSPO in both rat and human tissues. The compound has demonstrated neuroprotective and cardioprotective effects in preclinical models. Mechanistically, it stimulates steroidogenesis—specifically increasing pregnenolone levels—in the brain and peripheral nerves, which is believed to contribute to its neuroprotective actions. Developed by Sanofi-Aventis for indications such as diabetic neuropathies and heart failure, clinical development was discontinued after Phase II trials for diabetic neuropathy. Preclinical studies also suggest potential utility in other neurodegenerative diseases due to its ability to promote neuronal survival and repair[1][3][5][9].
