Overview

SSRI + zinc refers to the combination of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant with supplemental zinc, used as an adjunct therapy for major depressive disorder and related mood disorders. SSRIs are a class of antidepressants that increase serotonin levels in the brain by inhibiting its reuptake into presynaptic neurons, thereby enhancing serotonergic neurotransmission. Zinc is an essential trace mineral involved in numerous neural processes, including neurogenesis, synaptic plasticity, and modulation of neurotransmitter systems such as glutamate and GABA. Clinical studies have shown that adding zinc supplementation to SSRI therapy can further reduce depressive symptoms compared to SSRIs alone, particularly in individuals with low baseline zinc levels or treatment-resistant depression[1][2][5][6]. The proposed mechanisms for this synergistic effect include enhancement of monoaminergic transmission (notably serotonin), upregulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), antagonism at NMDA receptors affecting glutamatergic signaling, and immunomodulatory actions[3][4]. This combination is not a single pharmaceutical product but rather a therapeutic strategy involving co-administration.
