SSS11 is a pegylated recombinant form of the enzyme uricase (urate oxidase) derived from the yeast Candida utilis. It is being developed as an injectable treatment for gout and hyperuricemia, particularly in patients who have elevated serum uric acid levels and may not respond adequately to conventional oral therapies. The drug works by catalyzing the oxidation of uric acid to allantoin, a more soluble compound that can be more easily excreted by the kidneys, thereby lowering serum urate levels. PEGylation (attachment of polyethylene glycol chains) increases its half-life and reduces immunogenicity compared to non-PEGylated forms[1][2][4]. Clinical trials are ongoing to assess its safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and preliminary efficacy in both healthy volunteers and patients with gout/hyperuricemia[1][2][4].
