Overview

SSS57 is a recombinant human activin receptor type IIB (ActRIIB)-Fc fusion protein developed by 3SBio (Shenyang Sunshine Pharmaceutical). It functions as a ligand trap for specific members of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily, such as growth differentiation factor 11 (GDF11) and activins, which are known to inhibit late-stage erythropoiesis. By binding these ligands and preventing them from signaling through endogenous receptors, SSS57 promotes the differentiation and maturation of late-stage red blood cell precursors (erythroblasts). This mechanism is intended to treat anemia in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and beta thalassemia. As of 2024/2025, it is undergoing Phase 1 clinical evaluation in China to assess safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics in healthy volunteers and postmenopausal women.
