Overview

ST3GAL1 shRNA is a short hairpin RNA (shRNA) designed to silence the expression of the ST3GAL1 gene, which encodes alpha-2,3-sialyltransferase 1. ST3GAL1 is a glycosyltransferase that mediates the alpha-2,3-sialylation of glycoproteins, a process found to be essential for melanoma maintenance and survival. By suppressing ST3GAL1, the shRNA inhibits the sialylation of transmembrane proteins such as the amino acid transporter CD98hc (SLC3A2), leading to reduced protein stability and subsequent inhibition of melanoma cell proliferation. This research-stage tool was identified through in vivo functional screens and supports ST3GAL1 as a novel therapeutic target in melanoma.
