STAARVISC-II is a cohesive ophthalmic viscosurgical device (OVD) containing 1.2% high molecular weight sodium hyaluronate, developed by STAAR Surgical. It is primarily indicated for use during anterior segment ophthalmic procedures, such as cataract extraction and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. The substance acts as a mechanical lubricant and space-filler, maintaining the depth of the anterior chamber and providing a clear surgical field. Its high viscosity under low shear rates protects the delicate corneal endothelial cells and other intraocular tissues from mechanical trauma caused by surgical instruments or IOL contact. Due to its cohesive nature, STAARVISC-II can be easily and completely aspirated from the eye at the conclusion of the surgery, which helps to minimize the risk of postoperative intraocular pressure spikes.
