Overview

Stabilised Whole Rice Bran (SWRB) is a nutrient-dense derivative of the rice milling process, specifically treated to deactivate lipase enzymes and prevent the rapid rancidity typically associated with raw rice bran. Developed for therapeutic use in dermatology by the RCSI & UCD Malaysia Campus, SWRB is being evaluated as a topical intervention for pediatric patients with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis. The substance is rich in bioactive compounds, including gamma-oryzanol, tocopherols, tocotrienols, and essential fatty acids (such as linoleic acid), which collectively provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and skin-barrier-restoring properties. In clinical applications, it is utilized as a powder that can be reconstituted with water to form a cleanser or a topical emollient paste, offering a cost-effective and natural alternative to conventional topical corticosteroids and synthetic moisturizers.
