Overview

Stabilized hypochlorous acid is a physiologically balanced solution of hypochlorous acid (HOCl), typically maintained at a pH of 3.5 to 5 to maximize antimicrobial activity and stability[2][6]. It is an oxyacid of chlorine with potent broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties, effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi, viruses, and biofilms[2][3][9]. Stabilization technology allows for long shelf-life and consistent potency compared to traditional unstable HOCl solutions[3]. Mechanistically, it acts as an oxidizing agent that disrupts microbial cell membranes and proteins through oxidative damage[4][8], while also exhibiting anti-inflammatory effects by modulating cytokine activity and protease function[8][10]. Clinically, stabilized HOCl is used primarily as a topical wound care agent for infection control in acute/chronic wounds (including diabetic ulcers), scar management (hypertrophic/keloid scars), burn care, dermatologic procedures (e.g., atopic dermatitis-associated pruritus), oral/ophthalmic infections, and surgical antisepsis[7][9][10]. It has demonstrated safety in animal models with no significant toxicity or irritation at therapeutic concentrations; it does not impede wound healing processes but may promote epithelialization and reduce scarring[5][6].
