Stabilized oxychlorocomplex (SOC) is an oxidative preservative system primarily used in ophthalmic preparations to maintain product sterility while minimizing ocular surface irritation. It consists of a stabilized mixture of chlorine dioxide, chlorite, and chlorate. SOC functions as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial by oxidizing essential microbial components, including proteins and lipids. Its primary clinical advantage is its transient or disappearing nature; upon contact with the tear film, the complex dissociates into water, oxygen, and sodium chloride—ions that are naturally present in human tears. This rapid degradation significantly reduces the risk of corneal epithelial toxicity and ocular surface damage compared to traditional preservatives like benzalkonium chloride (BAK), making it a preferred choice for chronic ophthalmic therapies such as those for glaucoma and dry eye syndrome.
