Overview
**Staccato alprazolam** is an investigational, single-use inhaled drug-device combination for rapid, on-demand termination of ongoing stereotypical prolonged epileptic seizures. It uses the Staccato thermal aerosolization inhaler platform to deliver the benzodiazepine **alprazolam** through the lungs for rapid systemic absorption. Alprazolam is a positive allosteric modulator of the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor, enhancing inhibitory GABAergic neurotransmission to suppress seizure activity. The program originated at Alexza Pharmaceuticals as AZ-002, was licensed to Engage Therapeutics, and was acquired by UCB; UCB is conducting an ongoing Phase 3 program in epilepsy.
