Stafal

Stafal is an anti-staphylococcal biologic therapy consisting of a polyvalent preparation of lytic bacteriophages from the *Herelleviridae* family (genus *Kayvirus*). Originally developed in the 1980s by Bohemia Pharmaceuticals and currently manufactured by AUMED (MB Pharma), it is one of the few phage therapy products registered for therapeutic use in the European Union, specifically in the Slovak Republic. The product is indicated for the topical treatment of *Staphylococcus aureus* infections, including methicillin-resistant *S. aureus* (MRSA) and methicillin-sensitive (MSSA) strains. It is used to clear purulent wounds, treat chronic skin and soft tissue infections, and decolonize the upper respiratory tract (nose and nasopharynx) to prevent recurrent infections. The bacteriophages in Stafal work by specifically binding to and lysing the bacterial host cells, effectively reducing the bacterial load at the site of infection.
