Overview

The standard dose influenza vaccine is an inactivated or recombinant protein-based vaccine designed to provide active immunization against infection by seasonal influenza A and B viruses. It contains hemagglutinin antigens from the strains predicted to circulate during the upcoming flu season. Standard dose refers to formulations containing 15 micrograms of hemagglutinin per virus strain per 0.5 mL dose for adults and older children. These vaccines work by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against the included viral antigens without causing disease. Most standard-dose vaccines are administered intramuscularly and are available as trivalent (three strains) or quadrivalent (four strains) formulations. They do not contain adjuvants (with exceptions like Fluad), and are distinct from high-dose or adjuvanted versions recommended for older adults. Mechanism of action: Induces humoral immune response by presenting inactivated viral antigens (primarily hemagglutinin) to elicit production of neutralizing antibodies that prevent infection with circulating influenza viruses[4][6][8].
