This protocol was based on the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) guidelines. While the specific components evolved during the pandemic, the regimen primarily featured hydroxychloroquine (an antimalarial small molecule) administered at a loading dose of 400 mg twice daily followed by 200 mg twice daily. In various trial iterations, the standard of care may have also included other repurposed agents such as the antiparasitic ivermectin or the antiretroviral combination lopinavir/ritonavir. These treatments were used as the baseline comparison for assessing the efficacy of adding supplemental antiviral agents like sofosbuvir and daclatasvir to the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
