Overview

This is a combination drug consisting of a standard opioid (such as morphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, or codeine) and methocarbamol. Opioids are potent analgesics that act primarily as agonists at the mu-opioid receptor to provide pain relief by inhibiting ascending pain pathways in the central nervous system. Methocarbamol is a centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxant with an unclear mechanism of action; it is thought to depress polysynaptic reflexes in the spinal cord and decrease nerve transmission in spinal and supraspinal pathways. The combination may be used for acute musculoskeletal pain where both significant analgesia and muscle relaxation are desired. However, combining opioids with methocarbamol increases the risk of central nervous system depression, including drowsiness, respiratory depression, confusion, hypotension, seizures, coma, or death[1][5][6]. This combination should be used cautiously due to additive sedative effects.
