This protocol represents the standardized medical treatment for adult COVID-19 patients with respiratory distress, adhering to the guidelines of the Colombian Infectology Society and the Ministry of Health and Social Protection. The regimen includes a combination of the corticosteroid dexamethasone, the IL-6 receptor antagonist tocilizumab, anticoagulants such as enoxaparin or low molecular weight heparin, and empirical antibiotics. The protocol was used as a comparator to evaluate the efficacy of adding intravenous Alprostadil (prostaglandin E1) in reducing mortality and preventing complications like acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in intensive care settings.
