Overview

Standard umbilical cord blood** refers to blood that is collected from the umbilical cord and placenta immediately after the birth of a baby. It is a rich source of multipotent hematopoietic stem cells, which can differentiate into all major types of blood cells. Standard umbilical cord blood units are typically collected using sterile procedures after the cord is clamped and cut, then processed and cryopreserved for potential future use in transplantation. It is primarily used for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation to treat a range of blood and immune system disorders, such as leukemias, lymphomas, anemias, and select genetic or metabolic diseases. The normal cellular composition includes red and white blood cells, platelets, plasma, and a higher proportion of immature T-cells compared to peripheral blood. Standard umbilical cord blood is distinct from manipulated or expanded cord blood products, as it consists of minimally processed, banked units prepared according to international standards.[2][3][7][8]
