Overview

Standardised Concentrated Neonatal Parenteral Nutrition (scNPN), also known by the acronym SCAMP (Standardised Concentrated Additional Macronutrients Parenteral Nutrition), is a multi-component intravenous nutritional formulation developed and studied at Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust. It is designed for the management of prematurity, specifically targeting very preterm infants born at less than 29 weeks gestation who are unable to tolerate enteral feeding. The formulation is a compounded preparation containing standardized concentrations of carbohydrates (glucose), proteins (amino acids), fats (lipids), vitamins, and minerals. Its primary therapeutic goal is to provide systemic nutritional support to promote early growth, particularly head and brain growth, and to reduce the risk of neurodevelopmental disability associated with postnatal growth failure. It was evaluated in the Phase IV SCAMP randomized controlled trial, which compared the standard scNPN formulation against a higher-macronutrient version (scNPNmax).
