Overview

Standardized walnut antigen is an allergen extract developed for oral immunotherapy (OIT) to treat severe walnut allergy. It is currently being evaluated in the EXLOW study, a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in Japan. The treatment involves the oral administration of very low, standardized doses of walnut protein (specifically 3 mg or 30 mg) to induce immunological desensitization. The primary goal is to modulate the immune response, measured by changes in walnut-specific IgG4 and IgE levels, thereby increasing the threshold for allergic reactions. The development is sponsored by the Nipponham Foundation for the Future of Food (NFFF).
