Overview

Stannous chloride (tin(II) chloride, SnCl2) is an inorganic compound used primarily as a reducing agent in various industrial and pharmaceutical applications. In medicine, it serves as a component of technetium-99m radiopharmaceutical kits for diagnostic imaging. Stannous chloride acts by reducing technetium-99m to allow the formation of Tc99m-labeled complexes (such as Tc99m-pyrophosphate), which are then used for imaging areas of altered osteogenesis or detecting infarcted heart tissue. Stannous chloride itself does not have direct pharmacological effects at clinical dosages; its role is to facilitate the preparation of active radiopharmaceutical agents[1][2][3][5].
