Overview

Stannous fluoride is an inorganic compound with the formula SnF₂ used primarily in dental care products such as toothpastes and mouthwashes. It acts by promoting remineralization of tooth enamel and converting hydroxyapatite into fluorapatite, making teeth more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria. Stannous ions also provide antibacterial effects that help reduce plaque formation and gingivitis. Compared to sodium fluoride, stannous fluoride has demonstrated superior efficacy in reducing dental caries (cavities), hypersensitivity, gingivitis, dental erosion, halitosis (bad breath), and staining. The compound was first developed for commercial use by Joseph Muhler and William Nebergall in 1956 for Crest toothpaste[5][2][1]. It is FDA-approved for over-the-counter use to prevent cavities and treat dentinal hypersensitivity[2][4].
