Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Stannous fluoride + arginine is a combination oral care formulation designed to provide comprehensive dental protection and biofilm management. Stannous fluoride (SnF2) is a well-established multi-benefit active ingredient that serves as an antimicrobial agent, an anti-caries mineralizer, and a desensitizing agent by occluding dentin tubules. Arginine, a naturally occurring amino acid, is included as a prebiotic substrate for arginolytic bacteria within the oral biofilm. These bacteria metabolize arginine via the arginine deiminase system to produce ammonia, which neutralizes plaque acids and helps maintain a healthy, non-cariogenic pH balance. The combination is primarily developed by Colgate-Palmolive and is featured in their reformulated Colgate Total product line to enhance the stability and efficacy of stannous fluoride while promoting a balanced oral microbiome.
