Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Staphylea bumalda extract (SBE) is a botanical extract derived from the tender leaves and buds of *Staphylea bumalda*, an edible shrub native to temperate regions of Asia. The extract is rich in bioactive flavonoids, specifically hyperoside, kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside, isorhoifolin, and rutin. In preclinical research, SBE has demonstrated significant therapeutic potential for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). Its mechanism involves the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), as well as the inhibition of oxidative stress markers such as myeloperoxidase (MPO) and nitric oxide (NO). Furthermore, SBE appears to modulate the gut microbiota by increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria like *Lactobacillus*, thereby maintaining intestinal homeostasis and reducing mucosal injury.
