The Staphylococcus epidermidis PS-1 vaccine is an investigational vaccine designed to prevent infections caused by *Staphylococcus epidermidis*, a leading cause of healthcare-associated infections, particularly those involving implanted medical devices. The vaccine targets Polysaccharide 1 (PS-1), a unique cell-surface carbohydrate antigen expressed by many clinical isolates of *S. epidermidis*. Unlike the poly-N-acetylglucosamine (PNAG) or polysaccharide intercellular adhesin (PIA) found in many staphylococci, PS-1 is a distinct antigen that elicits strain-specific or group-specific immunity. The mechanism of action involves the induction of opsonic antibodies that facilitate the recognition and destruction of the bacteria by neutrophils and other phagocytic cells. Development has primarily been led by academic researchers, notably at Brigham and Women's Hospital, focusing on high-risk patients such as those receiving prosthetic joints or vascular catheters.
