Overview

Staphylococcus lysate is an immunomodulatory preparation consisting of lysed Staphylococcus bacteria, used for both therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. The most clinically prominent form is **Staphylococcus albus lysate**, marketed in China as **白葡萄球菌片** (Staphylococcus Albus Tablets). This oral formulation is primarily indicated for the treatment of chronic bronchitis and the prevention of recurrent respiratory tract infections, as well as the management of leukopenia induced by radiotherapy or chemotherapy. The lysate acts as a non-specific immunostimulant, enhancing the phagocytic activity of macrophages and neutrophils and promoting the production of antibodies such as secretory IgA. In veterinary medicine and research, staphylococcus lysates (including autologous versions and standardized preparations like STAVA) are utilized as diagnostic reagents for delayed-type hypersensitivity skin tests and as therapeutic vaccines for conditions such as bovine mastitis. The mechanism of action likely involves the activation of innate immune pathways via Toll-like receptors (TLRs), particularly TLR2, which recognizes components of Gram-positive bacterial cell walls.
