Overview

Staphylolysin, specifically in the context of clinical development by Shanghai Gaoke United Biotechnology, refers to a recombinant form of the enzyme **lysostaphin**. While the term "staphylolysin" historically refers to hemolysin toxins produced by *Staphylococcus aureus*, this therapeutic agent is a glycylglycine endopeptidase originally derived from *Staphylococcus simulans*. The enzyme works by specifically targeting and cleaving the pentaglycine cross-bridges in the peptidoglycan layer of the *S. aureus* cell wall. This mechanism leads to rapid bacterial lysis and is effective against both methicillin-sensitive and methicillin-resistant *Staphylococcus aureus* (MRSA) strains. It is primarily being developed as a topical formulation, such as an ointment, for the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections caused by MRSA.
