Overview

Stavudine + zidovudine is a combination of two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) used in antiretroviral therapy for the treatment of HIV infection. Both drugs act as thymidine analogues and inhibit HIV reverse transcriptase by causing DNA chain termination during viral replication. However, this specific combination is not recommended due to virologic antagonism between the two agents; their concurrent use can reduce antiviral efficacy and increase toxicity risk. Each drug is generally used in combination with other antiretrovirals but not together in the same regimen[2][6]. Stavudine was developed by Bristol-Myers Squibb and marketed as Zerit, while zidovudine was developed by Glaxo Wellcome (now part of GSK) and marketed as Retrovir[4][5].
