Overview

STEBVax is a recombinant protein-based vaccine designed to protect against toxic shock syndrome and endotoxic shock caused by Staphylococcus aureus producing the superantigen staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB). The vaccine consists of a genetically detoxified recombinant SEB toxoid containing three mutations in the major histocompatibility complex class II binding site. It is formulated with an alum adjuvant (Alhydrogel) and administered parenterally. STEBVax induces functional toxin-neutralizing antibodies that block the activity of SEB, thereby preventing its pathological effects. Clinical studies have shown it to be safe and immunogenic in healthy adults[5][6][1]. The primary developers are Integrated BioTherapeutics and the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases[2][1].
