The specific product associated with the provided clinical trial context, known as **STEM-PD**, consists of high-purity dopaminergic neuron progenitors derived from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). These cells are surgically transplanted into the striatum (putamen) of patients, where they are intended to mature into functional, dopamine-releasing neurons that integrate into the host's neural circuitry. This approach aims to provide a regulated, endogenous source of dopamine, potentially alleviating motor symptoms and reducing the need for exogenous levodopa therapy. The STEM-PD program is a collaborative effort involving researchers at Lund University and is sponsored by Region Skane in Sweden.
