Stem Cell Educator Therapy is an ex vivo cell-based immune modulation treatment developed by Throne Biotechnologies in collaboration with Hackensack Meridian Health. The therapy is primarily designed to treat type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) by addressing the underlying autoimmune destruction of pancreatic islet beta cells. The procedure involves an extracorporeal circuit where a patient's blood is circulated through a closed-loop medical device containing adherent cord blood-derived multipotent stem cells (CB-SCs). During this brief contact, the patient's immune cells, including T lymphocytes and platelets, are "educated" by the CB-SCs to restore immune balance and induce tolerance. These re-educated cells are then returned to the patient's circulation, where they aim to suppress the autoimmune attack and promote the regeneration of islet function. This approach seeks to provide systemic immune modulation without the need for long-term immunosuppression. The therapy has received the FDA's Regenerative Medicine Advanced Therapy (RMAT) designation.
