**StemBells** are an experimental, preclinical targeted cell-therapy construct consisting of adipose-derived stromal cells coupled to dual-targeted ultrasound microbubbles. The cells are linked to the microbubbles through an anti-CD90 antibody, while an anti-intercellular adhesion molecule 1 antibody is used to target activated endothelium in infarcted myocardium and atherosclerotic lesions. Following intravenous administration, ultrasound-mediated acoustic radiation force can promote vascular-wall localization of the complexes. In rodent models of myocardial infarction and post-myocardial-infarction atherosclerosis, StemBells increased anti-inflammatory monocyte/macrophage phenotypes and improved features of plaque stability, including fibrous-cap thickness, without demonstrated improvement in infarct size or cardiac function in every model.
