Drug intelligence / Profile preview
StemSmart is a patented, allogeneic cell therapy consisting of activated or primed mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from adult human donor bone marrow. Originally developed by Isopogen WA and subsequently acquired by NeuroScientific Biopharmaceuticals, the therapy utilizes a patented enhancement process designed to improve the therapeutic activity, clinical performance, and anti-inflammatory efficacy of the MSCs. StemSmart works by modulating the patient's immune system; in response to inflammation, the MSCs secrete factors that reduce the activation and proliferation of immune cells and down-regulate the production of inflammatory mediators. The therapy is primarily being developed for the treatment of refractory Crohn's disease, particularly fistulising Crohn's disease, and has also shown potential in steroid-refractory graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), organ transplant immune tolerance, lung inflammation, and acute renal rejection.
