Overview

Stepronin is a small molecule mucolytic and expectorant drug used to relieve respiratory difficulties by dissolving thick mucus. It acts by inhibiting airway secretion in vitro through reducing chloride (Cl-) secretion from epithelial cells and decreasing mucus glycoprotein secretion from submucosal glands[1][2][3][5]. Stepronin promotes drainage of mucus from the lungs by thinning it and lubricating the irritated respiratory tract[2]. Unlike some other mucolytics, it does not adversely affect the gastric mucosa[3]. In addition to its expectorant properties, preclinical studies suggest immunosuppressive effects similar to cyclosporine A but with lower toxicity; it has also demonstrated antiviral activity in vitro against HIV-1 replication in mononuclear cells[3][6]. There are indications that Stepronin may have potential applications in cancer and inflammatory diseases based on recent research developments[4].
