Overview

Sterculia, also known as karaya gum, is a natural polysaccharide obtained from the exudates of trees in the genus *Sterculia* (primarily *Sterculia urens*). It functions as a bulk-forming laxative by acting as a natural fiber that absorbs water in the gastrointestinal tract, significantly increasing in volume to create a soft, bulky stool. This physical expansion stimulates peristalsis, the natural contraction of the intestinal muscles, to promote smooth stool passage without the systemic absorption or chemical irritation associated with stimulant laxatives. Sterculia is primarily used to treat chronic constipation and manage bowel function in patients with hemorrhoids, anal fissures, or those recovering from rectal surgery. Additionally, it is utilized as a pharmaceutical excipient in drug delivery systems for its mucoadhesive and controlled-release properties.
