This combination therapy involves the use of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) in conjunction with adoptive cell therapy using variant Natural Killer T (vNKT) cells. SBRT is a precision radiotherapy technique that delivers high doses of radiation to the tumor, aiming to cause direct cell death and stimulate an abscopal-like immune response by releasing tumor antigens. vNKT cells are a specialized population of immune cells that bridge innate and adaptive immunity, capable of direct cytotoxicity against tumor cells and recruitment of other immune effectors. This specific regimen is being developed by Changhai Hospital for the treatment of advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), building on previous research suggesting that SBRT can synergize with immunotherapy to improve outcomes in this recalcitrant cancer type.
