Overview

Sterile water is being investigated by University Tunis El Manar as a non-pharmacological/physical intervention for the rapid relief of acute renal colic pain associated with urolithiasis. Administered via intradermal injection at the site of maximal pain (thoraco-lumbar region), it is hypothesized to work through the gate control theory of pain or diffuse noxious inhibitory control (DNIC). By stimulating cutaneous mechanoreceptors and nociceptors, the injection creates a localized stinging sensation that potentially inhibits the transmission of visceral pain signals at the spinal cord level. This method offers a low-cost, non-systemic alternative to opioids like morphine, avoiding common systemic side effects such as respiratory depression, sedation, or nausea.
