Sterillium

Sterillium is a leading brand of alcohol-based hand disinfectants used extensively in clinical and surgical settings for hygienic and surgical hand antisepsis. Developed by BODE Chemie (a subsidiary of Paul Hartmann AG), the classic formulation is composed of a synergistic blend of 1-propanol, 2-propanol, and the quaternary ammonium compound mecetronium etilsulfate, which serves as both an active ingredient and a skin care component. Sterillium operates through a non-specific mechanism of action, primarily involving the rapid denaturation of microbial proteins and the disruption of cytoplasmic membranes, leading to the inactivation of bacteria (including MRSA and TB), fungi, and many enveloped and non-enveloped viruses. It is particularly noted for its high skin compatibility and sustained antimicrobial effect, often meeting the requirements for surgical hand preparation in a reduced application time compared to traditional scrubbing methods. Newer variants, such as Sterillium Gel and Sterillium Comfort Gel, utilize high-concentration ethanol (up to 85% w/w) as the primary active agent.
