Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sterofundin (often marketed as Sterofundin ISO or Isofundin) is an isotonic, balanced crystalloid solution intended for intravenous administration. It is specifically designed to match the electrolyte profile of human plasma more closely than traditional 0.9% saline, thereby reducing the risk of hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis. The solution contains a precise blend of sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and chloride, along with metabolizable anions such as acetate and malate. These anions act as bicarbonate precursors, providing a buffering effect that helps maintain or restore normal acid-base balance. Sterofundin is primarily used for extracellular fluid replacement in patients with isotonic dehydration, hypovolemia, or impending tissue acidosis. It is a staple in perioperative fluid management and intensive care medicine, developed and manufactured by B. Braun.
