A bioabsorbable steroid-eluting sinus stent is a medical device designed to be placed in the sinus cavity to provide mechanical support and localized drug delivery. In clinical trials led by Sun Yat-sen University, this stent is being evaluated for the treatment of radiation-induced sinusitis, a frequent complication in patients treated for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The device is composed of a bioabsorbable polymer scaffold that elutes a corticosteroid (typically mometasone furoate) over a period of several weeks. By delivering the anti-inflammatory agent directly to the sinus mucosa, the stent aims to reduce edema, prevent the formation of adhesions, and improve sinus drainage more effectively than conventional topical therapies like nasal sprays, which often suffer from poor patient adherence and limited penetration in post-radiation tissue.
