Overview

Sterubin is a **flavanone**—specifically, 7-methoxy-3',4',5-trihydroxyflavanone—extracted from Yerba Santa (Eriodictyon californicum), a plant native to California[3][2][1]. It has significant neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and iron-chelating properties demonstrated primarily in preclinical models of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease[1][2][4][5][6][7]. Sterubin acts to protect nerve cells by sustaining glutathione levels, preventing production of damaging reactive oxygen species, blocking regulated cell death (oxytosis and possibly ferroptosis), promoting Nrf2 and ATF4 signaling pathways (crucial for antioxidant response and protection against oxidative stress), and displaying a potent anti-inflammatory effect on microglia (brain immune cells)[6][2][1][5]. It has also shown the ability to inhibit monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B), reduce neuroinflammatory markers (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, NF-kB), and improve dopamine and serotonin homeostasis[5][1].
