Overview

Steviolbioside is a natural, non-caloric sweetener and a bioactive compound found in small amounts in the leaves of *Stevia rebaudiana*. It is also the main metabolite of the popular sweeteners rebaudioside A and stevioside. Steviolbioside has been used as an intermediate in medication synthesis and as a food additive. Pharmacologically, it exhibits antihyperglycemic, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, antituberculosis, and moderate anticancer activities. In vitro studies have shown that steviolbioside inhibits the growth of *Mycobacterium tuberculosis* more effectively than stevioside. It has also demonstrated cytotoxic effects against certain cancer cell lines (such as human breast cancer MDA-MB-231) while being less toxic to normal cells compared to standard chemotherapy agents like 5-fluorouracil. Mechanistically, its actions are thought to involve modulation of glucose transport pathways similar to insulin signaling (PI3K/Akt pathway), but specific molecular targets for steviolbioside itself remain unclear[1][2][4].
