Overview

Stibophen is an anthelmintic drug classified as a trivalent antimony compound and used primarily for the treatment of schistosomiasis (a disease caused by parasitic flatworms) via intramuscular injection. It was originally developed by Bayer. The drug acts by inhibiting the enzyme phosphofructokinase in *Schistosoma* species, which is essential for glycolysis. This inhibition occurs at least partly through binding to the sulfhydryl (–SH) group of the enzyme. As a result, glycolysis in the parasite is blocked, leading to paralysis; affected worms lose their grip on mesenteric veins and are subsequently cleared from circulation and phagocytosed by liver cells[1][2][3][5].
