Overview

Stibosamine is an antimonial compound classified as an antiprotozoal agent. While specific detailed mechanisms for stibosamine are not extensively documented, its action is believed to be analogous to other pentavalent antimonials used in the treatment of parasitic infections, particularly leishmaniasis. These antimonials are thought to exert their therapeutic effects by interfering with the biochemical pathways essential for parasite survival. This includes inhibiting key enzymes involved in nucleotide synthesis and thiol metabolism, thereby disrupting DNA replication and energy production within the parasite. Additionally, they are understood to induce oxidative stress by generating reactive oxygen species within Leishmania cells and impairing the parasite's antioxidant defense mechanisms, ultimately leading to parasite death.
