Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Stir-fried Chinese yam (Chao Shan Yao) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) preparation of the rhizome of Dioscorea oppositifolia (syn. Dioscorea opposita). The preparation involves dry-frying or bran-frying (Fu Chao) the dried slices of Chinese yam until they turn pale yellow. This processing method is believed in TCM to enhance the herb's ability to tonify the Spleen and Stomach, harmonize the Middle Jiao, and stop diarrhea. It is commonly used to treat Spleen deficiency with chronic diarrhea, loose stools, poor appetite, and fatigue, as well as Kidney deficiency with leukorrhea or spermatorrhea. Chemically, it contains polysaccharides, mucilage, saponins (such as diosgenin), and starch, which contribute to its gastroprotective, immunomodulatory, and hypoglycemic properties.
