Stomatin-like protein 2 (SLP-2), also known as STOML2, is a member of the stomatin family located in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It acts as a mitochondrial scaffold protein that regulates mitochondrial function, integrity, and bioenergetics by organizing cardiolipin-enriched membrane domains and stabilizing mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes. In therapeutic development for Parkinson's disease, SLP-2 is being investigated as a gene therapy target; increasing its expression via viral vectors (such as AAV) has been shown to rescue mitochondrial dysfunction, reduce oxidative stress, and prevent the loss of dopaminergic neurons in models of alpha-synuclein neuropathology.
