Overview
STR001 is an investigational intratympanic thermogel formulation of pioglitazone, a small molecule PPARγ agonist, developed by Strekin AG for the treatment of hearing loss. Originally approved as an oral medication for type 2 diabetes, pioglitazone is repurposed in this formulation to protect auditory hair cells and cochlear structures from damage. The thermogel delivery system allows for local administration via intratympanic injection, where it transitions to a gel at body temperature to provide sustained release of the active ingredient into the inner ear. STR001 has been evaluated in Phase 2 trials for the preservation of residual hearing in patients undergoing cochlear implant surgery and in a Phase 3 trial (RESTORE) for sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL).
