Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Strangvac is a veterinary recombinant subunit vaccine for horses and ponies that provides active immunisation against Streptococcus equi, the causative agent of strangles, to reduce fever, respiratory signs, inappetence, dysphagia, demeanour changes and lymph node abscesses during the acute stage of infection.[1][5] The vaccine contains three recombinant fusion proteins (CCE, Eq85 and IdeE) derived from eight surface-localised S. equi virulence antigens, produced in Escherichia coli and formulated with an ISCOM-type adjuvant system including purified Quillaja saponin QS‑21, cholesterol and phosphatidylcholine, and does not contain live bacteria or S. equi DNA, conferring DIVA (Differentiating Infected from Vaccinated Animals) capability.[1][3][4] By inducing systemic and local IgG responses that block bacterial adhesion, neutralise immune-evasion factors such as the IgG-cleaving protease IdeE, and target essential virulence proteins, Strangvac enhances clearance of S. equi and has been shown in controlled trials and field studies to significantly reduce infection rates, clinical severity and lymph node abscess formation after experimental and natural exposure.[1][2][3][4][6][7]
