Stratofuse is an orthobiologic bone graft substitute composed of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) in a biocompatible carrier, such as sodium hyaluronate. Developed by RTI Surgical, it is designed for use in orthopedic and spinal fusion procedures to fill bone voids or gaps and promote the formation of new bone. The product works through two primary mechanisms: osteoconduction, where the physical structure of the matrix serves as a scaffold for new bone growth, and osteoinduction, where the demineralization process exposes naturally occurring growth factors like bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) that signal local cells to differentiate into osteoblasts. Stratofuse is typically provided in a putty or paste format, allowing for precise handling and placement within the surgical site.
