Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Strelitzia reginae leaf methanol extract is a research-grade natural product derived from the leaves of the Bird of Paradise plant (*Strelitzia reginae*), a perennial native to South Africa. This complex mixture contains a diverse array of phytochemicals, including alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, phenols, saponins, and steroids. In academic research, the leaf methanol extract has demonstrated significant antioxidant activity in DPPH and FRAP assays. While some studies suggest the leaf extract itself may lack direct anti-inflammatory properties, research on related methanolic aerial extracts (which include leaf material) has shown potential anti-arthritic effects in rat models. These effects are mediated through the modulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, IL-17A, IL-1β, and TNF-α. The extract is currently utilized exclusively in laboratory settings for biological evaluation and is not being developed as a commercial pharmaceutical product by any identified company.
